How to Generate Dozens of Email Campaign Ideas When You Think Your Business Is Boring

Retention Recipes

"I don't know man, I just don't have anything interesting to write about."

I'm sitting on a Zoom call with Bob Reynolds.

He's a Grammy-winning saxophone player who plays sold out gigs all around the world.

...and with a straight face, he’s saying he has NOTHING interesting to write about??

LOL.

I proceed to interview him for the next hour.

He tells me how he first met John Mayer at music college during a 3 AM recording session.

He tells me about having lunch with rock legend David Crosby.

He tells me about the time they had to get a backup drummer for a European gig who had to learn the entire set on the airplane.

And maybe 5 other stories I don't even remember.

My point?

Even someone living a life that's completely extraordinary  feels like they have nothing to write about.

I can already hear the eCommerce brands whining:

"But Ben, I just sell  supplements. That's boring."

Here's what you need to realize:

What you're doing as a business owner is very uncommon.

The average person goes to a 9-5 job, then chills on the sofa mindlessly doom scrolling on their phone.

They will never have the courage to do what you’re doing.

That's where your awesome emails can become a source of entertainment for them.

Ok!

Now that I got you fired up to write, here are some actual frameworks that I always use when I get stuck.

Enjoy

14 Email Campaign Frameworks That Work Every Time

1. The Creation Story

Share the story of how your product/business came to be - people love the why behind your business. You know what it is, but sharing it shows people that you're passionate. This can go in your welcome series, but you can talk about this every month because not everyone reads all your emails.

2. The Personal Story

Take some interesting or silly thing that happened to you and gracefully connect it to your product. Look at my past newsletters for examples of how to make these natural transitions work.

3. Behind-the-Scenes

Remember, the average person has never started a business and will never do it, so revealing the curtain is truly fascinating. People love watching, people love seeing behind the scenes.

4. Cautionary Tale

Warn readers about what NOT to do through a story of mistakes - could be yours, a client's, or what you see people in your space doing wrong. Use failures as teaching moments.

5. The News Story

Hop on Google really quick and do some searches to find current events you can connect to your product. Very good source for timely, relevant content. (Read this newsletter for more)

6. Historical Story

This is perfect for AI - just write what your product's about and ask ChatGPT to find 10 compelling connections. One of my favorites.

7. Success Story/Testimonial Email

Go digging into your reviews and find a really good story. You can throw it into an email completely uncut, and lead with "I got this amazing email the other day from a customer," paste their screenshot or testimonial directly, then finish with a few lines and drop a link. You can write this in 10 minutes when pressed for time. (Read this newsletter for more

8. The Q&A Email

Answer common questions that you always hear. Instead of doing five questions in one email, break out your top ten most common questions - that's ten different emails right there. Don't be shy about writing these repeatedly because you're always getting new people on your list.

9. Problem-Solution Email

Identify a big industry problem, explain why common solutions don't work, then show your better way. Focus on the specific mechanism that makes your product different.

10. Benefit-Focused

Remember, a big part of marketing is showing people what life will be like after they have your product. Focus on the transformation and outcome they'll experience.

11. Feature-Focused

Highlight one differentiating feature that makes you superior to competition. Explain what it does, why it matters, and how it creates better results.

12. The Mythbuster

As a business owner, you probably know tons of myths people have about your industry or product. Lead with the myth, then explain why it's not true. These are great because they position you as an authority.

14. The Straight Pitch

Don't be afraid to just sell something directly. You can just be like "Hey, here's some of our top selling products. Take a look." Not every email needs to be a Pulitzer Prize winning copywriting showcase.

There you go! Now get to writing.

What’s that??

You still hate the brain drain of planning out a content calendar, coming up with dozens of email ideas, writing those, designing those, setting them up in Klaviyo, and then proofing them?

Every. Single. Month.
