I'm sitting in this tiny restaurant in Arequipa, Peru, about to demolish some pollo a la brasa (roasted chicken over charcoal that'll ruin every rotisserie chicken for you forever).

I grab my favorite parts. Thighs and legs. Start going to town.

Five minutes later, I push my plate away.

My mother-in-law looks at my plate and starts cracking up.

"You're eating chicken like a gringo," she says.

Then she points to her plate.

Her chicken bones are completely stripped bare.

Not a single piece of meat left anywhere.

I look down at my plate. It looks like I took three bites and gave up.

Pathetic.

Why am I telling you about my embarrassing chicken-eating skills?

Because there's a good chance you're doing the same thing with your email automations.

Leaving a lot of meat on the bone.

Last month I was auditing a cookware brand’s Klaviyo account when I noticed the final email in their welcome series was turned off.

I check the historical data.

This email was pulling $7,787.55 per month.

When I asked them why it was turned off, "Oh… I didn't like the design."

That's $93,000 per year of cash sitting on the bone because they didn't like the way the design looked.

It looked fine, by the way.

The Quarterly Automation Audit

Once a quarter, you should put on some tunes and spend a few hours going through all your automations.

Here’s what you should look for:

✓ Are any emails accidentally turned off? 

✓ Any broken links or expired coupons? 

✓ Do you notice any significant performance drops in the data? 

✓ Are there any automations that could benefit from adding more emails? 

✓ What are some meaningful A/B tests you could set up? Maybe it’s a new design or angle for the content.

Automations are incredibly powerful assets but it's easy to set them and forget them. 

I'm guilty of doing it myself. But it's well worth your time to take peek.
